Sometimes, the smallest change, made in the right place, is all you need to significantly improve a product.
I spotted a great example of this in the iPhone calculator.
For a while now, the calculator has shown the full expression (every number and operator you enter) visible at the top of the screen.
That was the change. No big deal at first glance, but it makes a real difference.
Before this, when I used the calculator to go through my personal expenses, if someone interrupted me mid-calculation or I lost focus, I had to start over.
It was frustrating and felt like a waste of time.
Sometimes I even repeated the whole calculation, not because I forgot it, but to double-check the result.
There’s a reason this happens. Our brains rely on working memory, and it’s limited.
One distraction, and you lose the thread.
By keeping the full expression visible, the app reduces that mental load and improves the usability drastically.
This is a great reminder that thoughtful product decisions don’t always come from adding more.
Sometimes, they come from understanding how people actually use your product and removing friction where it matters.
Small change. Big impact.
